This was a very historic time for Apple because they were almost bankrupt at the time, so Steve announces a temporary partnership with Microsoft to a very hostile crowd. Apple have never claimed to have invented the portable MP3 player or the touch screen phone. They did however create the most popular portable MP3 player and one of the most popular touch screen phones.
Also flash doesn’t run well enough on the mac platform to be able to run on the phone well/at all. I’m fairly sure it’s a combination of Adobe not spending enough time on the mac flash plugin (it’s only a small market share) and Apple not releasing enough underlying OS X information.

The point is that Apple manages to implement technologies in ways that actually work for the end user. In the end, that’s also what really matters, and that’s a huge part of the reason for their success.
