with bachelors degrees not being what they used to and having to vigorously search for a job when you’re new to the market out of school, probably landing one that won’t pay well, would you say it is better to just get a city job in sanitation, etc.? You do your 20 years and retire with a pension where you can work another job while you simultaneously collect.
I’m curious what the pros and cons of this are.
Take the city job. They are secure, you’ll always have a paycheck. Usually don’t have a boss on your back. You get all the holidays, vacation and sick leave. A pension after 20 years, and you can work a second job for extra income. It may not be glamous but it is consistant

If you’re into "prestige," get a degree no matter what it qualifies you to do. Otherwise, there are a lot of manual trades – plumber, electrician, carpenter, etc. that are rewarding. City, state or county jobs do come with pretty good pension plans though. Congratulations on being sensible!
